Podium DD1 cogging issue (un-smooth steering after prolongued use)
Guys I'm getting fed up by my issue, and Fanatec doesn't give me clear indications that they have checked the issue on their end. I've been mailing back and forth thousand of times, and we are getting nowhere in solving this issue.
Issue: DD1 is smooth at startup of the base. But after about two hours, it becomes coggy.. Like a belt driven wheel and it is not smooth anymore... As if the magnets got thousands of volts stored in them.. When I turn the wheel, it's stepping/cogging all the way around... If I RESTART the wheelbase, everything is smooth again. But after a while it becomes un-smooth... Can anyone verify this for me? Play with it a few hours and see.. I'm using torque.
I have tested every driver since 337, aswell as firmwares and motor drivers. The issue is persistent on ALL drivers... Fanatec hints to me that it could be software, but seeing that it's persistent problem across all drivers, it's likely not.. Fanatec also suggest that i can send it back, but they say that if they don't find anything wrong with my wheel, they will charge me for shipping.. It indicates that they do not believe me.

Sorry to hear about your Wheel Base issues.
Maybe its and hopefully it's some defect in your motor? Because if so then Fanatec will and should be able to re create your same results.
You would need to tell them in which games it's happening in and the wheel settings for each game in game and in base.
This should allow the process of elimination to take its proper course so that maybe they can find a solution for you.
I plan to purchase this F1 Ps4 Podium when from them sometime this year hopefully however instead of selling my CSL elite I will keep it for just in case purposes.
I dont think it means that they dont believe you because it's not like their wheel based haven't had any issues before.
I think you have to be patient and persistent.
Take whatever solutions they can offer you and go from there.
How long have you had it and hownofterndo you use it?
Thanks. I made a forum post a while back with this issue: https://forum.fanatec.com/discussion/comment/38646#Comment_38646
Seems there is another person with the same issue, I found out today. Exactly like me, after 1:30h mark or 2:00h mark the wheel becomes un-smooth. I have had contact with Fanatec for many months now, and it happens in all games.. But it ALSO happens if I don't play at all.. Just the fact that the wheel is powered on is enough for this resistance to appear..
Note that it's hard to notice if you turn the wheel fast(ish) around.. Then it feels smooth and normal, but you can feel it if you turn it very slowly... Some people would probably think "Why turn it so slow?".. Because of ETS2 and ATS.. Slower games which requires precision
Tested among three other friends who also have the same wheelbase. They did not have this issue.. I found out that the issue appears if I have 100% force feedback. If I dial it back to 95%, the issue disappers.. Seems to be defective outrunner magnets. I'm trying to get a hold on support again
If anyone is interested in testing themselves, I've made a detailed document explaining the issue: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HC6YacMkdj2iExf_c7vRdQ9VpszuL-JN-V9WdA9p2J4/edit
I feel magnets all the time and not 11 steps but much more. I've never had another Direct Drive and I don't know if it's normal, but it's definitely not super smooth. I feel like I'm in a bar.
Please write how are you?
Hey Pawel. Some mechanical resistance is normal. What you're describing is not a problem, everyone has it. My spesific problem are huge/long bumps. Don't worry about it Pawel, I think your Podium is fine :)
Kim thank you very much for your reply. I expected DD ultra smoothness ;-) Do other servo motors have this?
Hi Kim, i have not the same issue as you but i have also this hard knocking during racing and this happens not repeatable. I used 100% FF and reduced now to 95% to test if its gone --> no :(
Most of the times it happens when doing a curve with full load on the wheel, and then it comes a really load knock or how you call it, and for 1 second the load is gone and back. Thats not fine during a Race and should not happen on a DD1 Formula 1 WheelBase.
Sorry that i could not help you, but maybe when you find out what your problem is , mine is fixed too ;)
br and good luck, if i find out by myself i will let you know.

A DD can not be smooth, thats by the nature of the motor. If you want the smoothest wheel, you should go with the CSW v2.5 which is maybe the smoothest wheel on the market - and yes its smoother than a DD1/DD2, simply because of the belts.
Ok I got a new DD1 from Fanatec. I have the same bumpy feel after 2 hours of use with this one aswell.. I think the DD1 suffers from EMI issues. They probably can't handle a lot of interference from cables, extensions, dongles etc.. I have also made sure to run it in a grounded socket but it still gets this problem.
I have recently received my DD1 and experience this exact issue.
Wheel becomes "lumpy" and will not remain centred unless I hold the wheel straight. The resistance is enough to turn the wheel if I'm not holding it.
Did you find any kind of resolution for this problem?
Cheers
In my case it was EMI. Cables and such that didn't even have anything to do with my rig. Cables around my PC, power cables and such.
The recommended operation time of the wheel with continuous force feedback activity is 1 hour.
• Excessive use may cause health risks. We recommend to take a break of 5 minutes every 20 minutes, and do not drive for more than 2 hours per day.
This is in Manual. Im not sure what they mean. Its only for our healthy? Or are they covered and trying to say us if we use it more than 2h a day they just dont work then :D
i race 10+ hours 🤷♂️
Hi, after lot´s of searching, i found this thread.
I´m having the same behaviour with my new DD2. When i power it on, i feel lots of minimal steppings when i turn the wheel 360, not a problem. After some time of driving (a few minutes ago, i noticed it after aroud 20-25 minutes) there are excatly 11 "steps" when turning the wheel once around. The wheel can not be centered without holding it.
Any suggestions? I´ll try to place the computer and cables somewhere other...
Regards,
Dennis
Hi, to all simmracing fellows.
Is the problem solved in the meantime??
Nope
Also had problem with cogging, 11 steps on DD1. Now received repaired base, wow, what a difference in FFB. Now base is smoother and more enjoyable to use. If you have same 11 steps cogging, just make RMA ticket, you will not regret it. You shouldn't use broken 1000 EUR wheel base.
I have the very same issue but with DD2. Same 11 steps and insane cogging (not immediately after start). When I drive in the corner with recommended setting by fanatec, it is like driving on very bumpy road and it is realy unplayable. I am very very disappointed with fanatec quality. Even 800e on BF is terrible deal. Juris Nagodkins did it really helped you to replace the base? I am confidering to return everything and go a different vendor...
It's a known hardware issue of a lot of bases, just contact the support and they will be able to assist by either repairing or replacing your base.
Yes, Fanatec helped. On 22.11 made RMA request and received base back on 8.12. Was waiting for iracing end of season, so didn't loose much. Now base feels a lot better and smoother.
Are you Fanatec employee?
Yes.
So Fanatec is still selling bases with "known hardware issues" that concern "a lot" of them.
Interesting
How some of the 11 positions looks like. There is a strong drag to certain positions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI41_rKBheA
Hello Maurice, is it normal that after 1 hour I have cogging? I have a DD2 podium which is coming back from repair for the OLED display. I bought the dd2 on November 20th thank you well done
No, that is not normal. It is a well known hardware issue and you need to contact the support to get the base repaired or exchanged.
thank you very much for your answer
full rotation - 11 points of cogging ( seem like more people have this issue)

Yes. Contact the support to get the base repaired or exchanged.
